Skiing in Samoëns: a winter sports paradise in Le Grand Massif
Samoëns is a charming mountain village in the French Alps, located in the heart of the Haut-Giffre region. Situated at the foot of the Aiguille de Criou at an altitude of 2,207 metres above sea level, you can enjoy an impressive mountain panorama. Only 45 minutes by car from Geneva, the site offers international accessibility while maintaining a genuine French Alpine ambiance.
Whether families or gold medallists: Skiing at Samoëns is for everyone
As part of the Le Grand Massif collective (joining Morillon, Les Carroz, Sixt Fer à Cheval and Flaine), skiers here access 265 kilometres of marked runs spanning all difficulty levels. The interconnected lift system means you can ski from village to village, exploring different mountain faces and discovering new favourite descents throughout your stay. Maybe an exciting piece of information for you: French gold medalist Antoine Deneriaz practised his turns in Le Grand Massif for many years.
Samoëns Ski Resort also has a lot to offer families: In addition to 6 very easy slopes and 8 easy to intermediate runs, 14 lifts take you quickly up. The close proximity of easy descents to the village means parents can supervise young learners without long lift rides. Several ski schools employ patient instructors who specialise in working with children, using proven teaching methods that make learning fun rather than frustrating. As you can see: Families can really ski together at Samoëns, finding runs that challenge without overwhelm any member.
Freeride opportunities around Samoëns
Listen up, freeriders! Samoëns is also known for its beautiful off-piste runs. You'll find plenty of opportunities to slash the pow at the resort, from easily accessible descents just outside the boundary markers to serious backcountry lines. But keep always in mind that these adventures require proper safety equipment and avalanche knowledge. For the perfect off-piste experience, we recommend lighter, wider skis that glide smoothly through fresh powder.
Planning a powder mission? Visit our INTERSPORT Rent shop to get expert advice on the right freeride equipment for local conditions. Our RENTertainers will set you up and also share insider tips on current snow conditions and the best zones to explore.
Winter activities beyond skiing
The valley floor and surrounding forests provide groomed cross-country ski trails that showcase the region's natural beauty from a different perspective. These nordic tracks accommodate both classic and skating style, with circuits ranging from easy loops to longer expeditions requiring stamina.
Skijoring offers something completely different – imagine being towed on skis behind powerful horses, combining equestrian tradition with sliding sports in an experience that's both exhilarating and deeply rooted in mountain culture.
Winter hiking paths and snowshoe routes weave through pristine landscapes, offering peaceful alternatives to the slopes. Marked trails lead to scenic viewpoints where the silence is broken only by wind and your own breathing.
