Sweden: winter in the far north

Where snow sports fairytales become a reality

In Sweden, you can rely on guaranteed snow! Due to the country's northern location and low solar radiation, winters in Sweden are long and cold. Even low-lying regions quickly turn into snow-covered fairytale landscapes. This means, perfect conditions for skiing, snowboarding and cross-country skiing!

There are more than 200 ski resorts in Sweden, many of them quiet and free from all the hustle and bustle common for other ski regions. It's a dream come true for winter sports enthusiasts.

Tip: Sweat in the sauna, and then cool off in the cold snow. Go on a dog sledge ride or on a snowmobile tour. Watch wild elk and reindeer, or catch a fascinating glimpse of the mystical northern lights. Winter holidays in Sweden are truly a one-of-a-kind experience.

Sounds too good to be true? There's yet another reason to go skiing in Sweden. INTERSPORT Rent provides you with rental equipment from top manufacturers for your adventures in the Nordic snow.

More about the ski resorts

If you had to name a ski resort in Sweden, you'd probably think of Åre. No wonder! Åre is the most famous, highest and largest ski resort in the country, but here's a lesser known fact for you: The smaller ski resorts are equally as beautiful!

5 of the most stunning ski resorts in Sweden:

  • Åre
The traditional ski and World Cup resort is located in Jämtland, in central Sweden, about 600 kilometres north of Stockholm. It features a total of 90 ski runs and lots of variety for winter sports fans. Åre's slopes are legendary, and so is the nightlife at the village.

  • Riksgränsen
Situated on the "imperial border" to Norway and above the Arctic Circle, Riksgränsen is Sweden's northernmost ski resort. Fluffy powder snow and steep downhill runs mainly attract snowboarders and freeriders. The season lasts until well into June – and on midsummer evenings, you can even go skiing in the midnight sun.

  • Kläppen
In Kläppen, in central Sweden, you will find the country's largest snowpark and longest halfpipe (120 metres). No wonder that many snowboarders and freestylers chase after the most spectacular jumps and tricks there. Skiers mainly enjoy the easy and family-friendly slopes.

  • Dalarna: Sälen & Idre Fjäll
The Dalarna region, in the heart of Sweden, is a hot spot for families who want to go skiing in Sweden. Sälen is a good starting point for exploring a total of 100 slopes, 300 kilometres of cross-country ski trails, and three snow parks. The ski resort also has very easy (green) slopes for beginners and several family areas.

Idre Fjäll is located in Dalarna, too – just a little further north. It's a cosy little ski resort that's perfect for children, and yet it's also home to the region's steepest downhill run. What's more, the winter sports resort has made a name for itself as the national mecca for ski cross fans.

  • Lapland: Hemavan & Tärnaby
Only 18 kilometres separate the two ski resorts of Hemavan and Tärnaby in Lapland. If you are looking for a perfect mix of skiing or snowboarding and cross-country skiing, the far north is the place to go. If you are lucky, you can even see the northern lights in winter.

INTERSPORT Rent Tip

Our RENTertainers recommend

The Áhkká mountain range in Lapland is a true insider's tip among cross-country skiers. A guided tour through the untouched wilderness of Laponia – the land of the Sami people and their reindeer, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site – is an experience you'll remember for years to come.
